Golden Retriever Adults
Some people want an adult rather than a puppy because they think that an adult will be easier than a puppy. Some people want an adult
because they feel an adult will fit more easily than a puppy into their lifestyle, that their long work days can continue as before,
only now they will have a beautiful, trained Golden Retriever to welcome them home in the evenings; and to enjoy country walks with
them at the weekends.
However, an adult has a history and adopting an adult can present its own challenges. When she goes to a new
home an adult is leaving everything she has known and is going to a place where she doesn't even know the rules.
Our Golden girls usually
retire from breeding at the age of five. With us, they live in the countryside and are never alone. They have other Goldens for company
and, much of the time, they are with us also. When in a new home, a dog who is left alone in unfamiliar surroundings to cope with
his/her stress may resort to undesirable behaviour like chewing baseboards. For this reason, when our adult Goldens retire to pet
homes, they go only to people who have time to give them. This alleviates some of the stress of changing homes.
A country Golden transplanted
into the city or suburbs adjusts but the new owner must be patient while her new companion gets used to airbrakes and other strange
noises. At the same time, it is important that the new owner be gently firm with her new Golden so her pet can have confidence in
her new pack leader. The city owner of a sporting breed like the Golden must have a fenced yard and must be willing to meet her dog's
exercise needs, which, for an adult, means a minimum of two 45 minute walks a day.
By the way, adults are not free.
Occasionally, we have adult Golden Retrievers available. If you are interested in an adult, please read below then contact us for further information.
